THE PAINT & PRACTICE STUDIO FIELD GUIDE COLLECTION
Know what’s
on your palette.
Explore painting mediums, solvents, grounds, and finishes—what they do, how they behave, and how to use them responsibly.
Medium ≠ paint thinner
A medium changes how paint behaves. A solvent dissolves or thins material and evaporates.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN
Four studio habits
worth keeping.
- 01
Read the label & SDS
Products with the same general name can have different ingredients. The manufacturer’s current label and Safety Data Sheet are the final word.
- 02
Ventilate with intention
An open jar of “odorless” solvent still releases vapor. Keep lids closed and use the controls your instructor provides.
- 03
No food, no shortcuts
Never eat or drink in the work area. Don’t point brushes with your mouth or clean paint from skin with solvent.
- 04
Respect oily rags
Drying-oil rags can self-heat. Put them immediately in the school’s approved oily-waste container—never in a loose pile.
